Nonsense! is an innovative nonsensical word generator aimed at alleviating the challenges of decoding for struggling readers while introducing an element of enjoyment to the reading process. Developed by experienced educators, this application is notably designed to support the one in five students who face difficulties with reading. Its core focus lies in enhancing decoding skills by encouraging users to sound out nonsensical words, thereby reducing the likelihood of guessing words from familiar vocabulary.

This application serves a diverse audience including dyslexic learners, struggling readers, ESL/ESOL students, and those facing articulation challenges. However, it is essential to note that Nonsense! is not intended for independent student use; rather, it is best utilized under the guidance of learning and reading specialists, speech and language therapists, ESL/ESOL instructors, classroom teachers, and parents to provide comprehensive support.

Within the app, learners find themselves in an engaging laboratory environment where they manipulate an interactive generator to create their own nonsense words. The potential combinations are virtually endless, and readability is enhanced through the use of OpenDyslexic font, specifically designed for individuals with dyslexia. Users can progress through nine distinct levels as their phonemic skills develop.

The unique focus on decoding nonsense words compels readers to depend exclusively on their ability to associate sounds with over 40 phonemes and accurately blend them together. This method effectively removes the temptation for students to guess familiar words, ensuring a more focused learning experience.

The development of Nonsense! stemmed from a thoughtful collaboration between an Orton-Gillingham certified educator and her spouse, a professional with a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology from Johns Hopkins University. What began as a casual inquiry into creating a supportive program for readers evolved into a year-long project marked by dedication and refinement.

This application fosters a playful learning atmosphere where nonsense words present an inherently amusing challenge. The enjoyment derived from engaging with such whimsical terms encourages students to embrace the decoding process actively.
